The original church was built in 1866 to designs by Brandon and Freshwater, and was much enlarged and extended in 1893 by H A Cheers. It comprises a nave and north and south aisles, chancel, west and south east porches, and vestries.

Cheer’s works of 1893 included the demolition of most of the original building, excepting the bays of the North Aisle); enlarging the Nave and raising it to the level of the 1878 Chancel; adding another bay at the west end of the nave, together with a south aisle and narthex. The proposed tower at the south west corner was never built, due to a lack of sufficient funds.
