Henry (Harry) Arthur Cheers was born at Great Broughton in 1853 the son of Thomas Cheers. By 1861 the family had moved to Ranelagh Street Liverpool.

From 1872 to 1875 Henry Cheers was articled to T D Barry & Sons of Liverpool. He spent the following two years in the office of Thomas Waring of Cardiff and the two subsequent years at Leeds during which period he went on a sketching tour in The Netherlands, Germany and France. He commenced independent practice at Leeds before returning to Liverpool where he was briefly in partnership with Joseph Bromilow from 1878.  This partnership was dissolved in July 1882 following which H A Cheers moved south, firstly to Bagshot where he completed St Anne Bagshot 1882-4 and later to Twickenham.
