Restoration and part rebuilding

No 146, 148 We notice some very good oak fittings in Mr. Withers's "Church at Saling Magna," which are well relieved in the drawing by the plain chancel arch behind them. The pulpit is however out of perspective. The nave of the same church, shown in 148, is spoilt by the plain tie beams which run across it. [Building News 25 February 1859 page 195]

We now come to several carefully depicted restorations by Mr R J Withers (146-148) being views of the Parish Church of Saling Magna, Essex, of which the chancel, aisle and vestry were rebuilt, and new fittings added last year at a cost of £433.

SALING MAGNA (ESSEX) - The foundations of the new Parsonage are in, and the whole is to be completed by Michaelmas. It will be of red brick, with black bands and arches, of simple and inexpensive construction. The contract has been taken by Mr. Parmenter, of Bocking, for £987. The first contract for the restoration and enlargement of the parish church is nearly completed: it comprises the entire restoration of the chancel, with a new chapel on the north side of the chancel for school children, and a new vestry. The works have been carried out by the same contractor for £420. The carving is by Mr. H. Earp, of London. It is intended to complete the reseating and restoration of the nave by Michaelmas. Mr. Withers is the architect carrying out these works. [Builder 27 March 1858 page 213]
