A donation of £500 has been promised by Mrs Lee of Alder House, Atherton, towards providing for a new church for the parish of St Anne’s Hindsford, Atherton. A few weeks ago, Mrs Lee contributed £650 for the purchase of the minerals underneath the site, which has been given by Lord Lilford. Plans are being prepared by Messrs Austin and Paley, of Lancaster and the ceremony of laying the foundation stone will shortly take place. The estimated cost of the building is £6,000. A new church to accommodate 450 people is to be erected at Hindsford, Atherton, at a cost of £7,000, towards which sum £4,400 is promised or in hand, including £300 from Lord Lilford, and £150 from Major P Fletcher, of Atherton. The site, which contains 2,400 square yards, is the gift of Lord Lilford, but in order to provide for the stability of the fabric it will be necessary to leave unworked coal of the royalty value of £544, which sum is to be paid to Lord Lilford. TO BUILDERS - New Church at Hindsford, near Atherton - Contractors desirous of submitting TENDERS for the above church (stone) may see the plans and specification on application to the Rev J Preston, West Bank, Hindsford, and at the offices of the architects from Monday 28 September to Thursday 6 October (both days inclusive). Bills of quantities may be obtained on application to Messrs Wright and Son, surveyors, Lancaster. Tenders are to be delivered (under cover) to the architects not later than Friday, 7 October. The Bishop of Manchester has arranged to consecrate today the new church of St Anne’s Hindford, near Atherton. The church has cost £6,670 exclusive of the site, valued at £328, and will accommodate 454 seats, all of which are free. The parish was formed into a Peel district and cut out of the parish of Atherton about eleven years ago. [Manchester Guardian 31 January 1901 page 11]
