J.M. Threlfall started brewing in Liverpool but expanded into Salford when the Greengate Brewery was purchased in 1841. This brewery was situated between Caygill Street and Boond Street with an entrance on Greengate and it had been founded before 1820 when Gordon and Johnson began their operations there. In 1865 the site was acquired by Salford Corporation for £700 and the 'Salford Improved Industrial Dwellings' built on the site. Threlfalls built the first Cook Street Brewery in 1861, abandoning the Greengate premises four years later. The present buildings date from 1898 when the brewery was considerably enlarged. Brewing on the site ceased in 1988. The buildings were later converted into a business centre.
