EDENFIELD CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY’S INAUGURAL SOIREE - The opening of the hall in connection with the new stores of the above society was celebrated on Saturday evening last by a tea party and entertainment. Early last year the committee having decided to build new stores and six houses, a plot of land was secured for the purpose near the toll-bar on the Bury Road. Plans were procured from Messrs Maxwell and Tuke, and the building was begun in May, the work being let separately to local tradesmen for the sum of £2,463, exclusive of heating apparatus and fittings, and this sum has only been exceeded by about ten pounds. The total cost, including fittings is £2,800, exclusive of the cost of land. The design of the building is extremely simple. The fronts are pitch faced parpoints with Holcombe stone dressings. The plan is very conveniently arranged. Towards the front are three shops; the grocer’s 22 feet by 31 feet, at the end of which are shoots and bins for floor, etc. which is tipped from the warehouse behind upon a higher level. The draper’s shop is 26 feet by 24 feet; the butcher’s 18 feet by 16 feet and the clogger’s shop, which is in the side street, is 20 feet by 12 feet. There are also in this street the cart entrance to the warehouse, a room 43 feet by 21 feet, and the entrance to the assembly rooms on the first floor, which is a room 65 feet by 31 feet, with plain hopper ceiling and plaster moulds. Attached are secretary’s room, board room, ante rooms, tea room, etc., the whole being heated on the super-heated principle as applied by Mr Longbottom of Pleasington. Plans were procured from Messrs Maxwell and Tuke and the building was begun in May, the work being let separately to local tradesmen for the sum of ,2,463, exclusive of heating apparatus and fittings, and this sum has only been exceeded by about ,10, which must be a source of gratification to the committee. The total cost, including fittings is ,2,800, which sum, however, does not include the cost of the land. The design of the building is extremely simple.
