Replacement for the Great Exhibition House of 1854 (CHECK WORTHINGTON) the woodwork of which was badly decayed. The new house was some 9 feet lower than its predecessor, but still of over 25 feet high, having a steeper pitch to the roof. The original house was 165 feet long the new one 240 feet in length. Excepting the conservatory at Kew and the palm-house at Chatsworth, nothing in Great Britain compared in size.
