Maxwell and Tuke were eventually awarded third premium in a competition not without controversy and complaint ‑ a letter from an un‑named competitor appeared at the same time noting that his drawings had been returned without correspondence and carriage unpaid.

“The third prize of £75 to Messrs Maxwell & Tuke, architects, Bury, Lancashire, competitors under the motto of "Vincit omnia industria"  ‑ letter from Joseph Bayley, Town Clerk, Huddersfield to the editor of the British Architect dated 2 June 1877
