OPENING OF THE WERNETH MECHANICS’ INSTITUTE – In the afternoon Mr Gladstone attended the opening of the Werneth Mechanics’ Institute, a building in the Gothic style and situated in Manchester Street. The building contains a library, newsroom, reading room, billiard room, club and smoking room, a lecture hall, and the usual committee rooms and other offices. The lecture hall will accommodate 500 persons, and is one of the best rooms in the town. It was built by Mr D Jackson from the designs of Messrs Woodhouse and Potts, all of Oldham. ….
