Probably an early 16th-century merchant's house, placed on a burgage plot between the High Street and Alfred Jones Court and once known as the Black Boy Inn, the building was renovated by Frank Shayler in the 1890s. Early illustrations show that prior to this it had a thatched roof, and that the timber framing was not exposed. As well as exposing the timbers on the frontage, Shayler apparently added some decorative timber pieces of his own. The Mermaid Inn closed as a public house in 2012 and has since been converted to residential use.
