James Green, first built Portsmouth Mill, in 1847. Originally called Greens Mill, Portsmouth it was of four floors and used as a cotton mill. There appears to be some connection between the owners Haigh Green & Co and the Clivigar Coal and Coke Company. On 4 September 1948, a fire gutted the mill's top floors. As a result, the mill lost its major contract to Austin Motors for supplying seating. Local builders demolished the top two floors, re roofing the second floor.
