James Green was born in 1822 the son of John and Alice Green, farmers of Whalley and initially found work on the Leeds and Manchester Railway, being articled to the engineers George Stevenson/ TL Gouch and to Leigh Hall, the company architect at the time. At the time of his wedding in 1844 he was described as an architect, but shortly afterwards he entered into partnership with James Haigh as coal proprietors (Cliviger Coal and Coke Company) and cotton spinners. In 1846 he commenced work on the design of Plymouth Mill and purchased the site of Plymouth House. These non-architectural undertakings enjoyed some success. In the 1851 Census he was described as - James Green, Portsmouth House, aged 29, coal proprietor, merchant & cotton spinner, employing 45 men and 35 females in cotton factory, 160 colliers, and 10 masons.

Only in 1851 did he resume his career as architect and engineer with designs for the Mechanics Institute at Burnley followed by the Peel Institute (Accrington Town Hall), and the Market Hall in Burnley together with a number of churches and chapels. In 1861 he prepared a scheme for Todmorden Town Hall for the Todmorden Town Hall Company which was not progressed through lack of funds. He was elected FRIBA on 4 June 1866: proposed by three of Manchester’s leading architects Edward Salomons, Alfred Waterhouse, and Thomas Worthington. By 1876 he had opened an office in Manchester
