New Build

Built by the Prince of Wales Spinning Co Ltd. Extended 1886 and 1919 when the office block was also constructed. Ceased production in 1933. 1937-90 Slumberland Ltd - mattress factory. Demolished 1993.

Potts's innovations began with his design of the Prince of Wales mill in 1875, “one of the most complete and well-arranged mills in Oldham” (Textile Manufacturer, 11, 15 May 1878, 151), employing unusually narrow longitudinal ceiling vaults in place of the deep arch patented in 1871 by his older rival A. H. Stott. These vaults transferred all the thrust from a lateral to a vertical direction and at the same time reduced the amount of shadow in the spinning room.
