Part of a scheme for the general improvement of Cardigan, the public slaughterhouse was built on the site of Cardigan Poorhouse which by 1856 was in the several occupations of William Jeremiah, Elizabeth Martin, David Jeremiah, John Jeremiah, George Davies, Evan Jeremiah, Ann Williams, Margaret Evans, Thomas Lewis, and Hannah Lewis. The site was cleared by June 1858 and the contractors appointed were those employed on the Guildhall contract. The design is assumed to be by R J Withers.

1n 1987 it was converted to the Theatr Mwldan. Alterations included the infilling of the yard.
