St Andrew’s Parish Church, Aysgarth, dates from the thirteenth century but the lower portion of the tower and the columns of the nave are all that remain of the mediaeval building. The upper stage of the tower, pinnacles and battlement was added as part of the restoration in 1864. The church was restored and considerably re-built in 1866 at a cost of about £6000. It provides 620 sittings. [Bulmer’s History and Directory of the North Riding 1890]
