There are two churches at Warburton – the old church which dates from the 13th century and has been extensively restored and remodelled, and the new church which stands alongside the old one and was built between 1883 and 1885 by John Douglas of Chester. The old church is now closed and in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Inside is much timber framing “of the roughest and readiest kind” according to Pevsner, and in 1926 after it was treated for an infestation of death watch beetle, Swarbrick was called in to make the necessary repairs. There is a plaque recording his work on the south interior wall. - Richard Fletcher
