New build

The six or seven plots of building land left by the Corporation in cutting a continuation of High-street to Smithfield Market (an important and much-needed improvement) have nearly all been bought, three of them by Mr G B Filmer, printer and stationer, who has already erected on the site at the corner of Thomas-street and High-street, two substantial shops, five storeys high, one of which is occupied by Mr Filmer himself, and the other by a wholesale clothier. This plot cost £1,000. The other two plots bought by Mr Filmer are on the same side of the street as the foregoing, one adjoining that at the corner of Thomas-street, which cost £4,000, and the other at the angle of High-street and Turner-street, costing £600. Premises to be uses as shops and warehouse are being built upon this last-mentioned site, and are now approaching completion, while the middle plot of land is almost ready for building operations, the excavations having been completed for the foundations. On this latter site are to be erected three shops, to occupy the ground floor, over which will be four storeys of rooms set apart for the business of tailors and woolen cloth merchants. All these shops and premises are in one style of  building, the plans of which have been prepared by Messrs Alley and Company, of Princess-street. Mr Filmer is managing the building operations.
