FRODSHAM - The opening services in connection with the new Union Chapel and Schools were held on Sunday week. The group of buildings just erected comprises a chapel 35ft. by 30ft., a schoolroom 30ft. by 25ft., with six classrooms grouped around it, a vestry, and outbuildings, including a stable. The chapel itself will seat 150 persons, and a move able screen is arranged between it and the schoolroom, so that they can be thrown into one. The chapel has an open-timbered roof of pitch pine. The floor is of wood blocks of the same material, as also are the open benches, which have shaped ends. A baptistery is arranged under the floor in front of the pulpit, lined with white glazed bricks. The pulpit is octagonal, of pitch pine with oak traceried and perforated panels in the upper part, and a Communion table and chairs of corresponding design are placed in front of the pulpit above the baptistery, choir seats being arranged at the side near the organ chamber. A pitch pine dado is carried round the walls of the chapel, 5ft. high. The whole building is heated by small pipes on the high-pressure system. The base of the building is of local red stone, and the superstructure is of local bricks, with red Ruabon window dressings, the roofs being covered with grey Welsh slates. The ventilating turret is covered with oak cleft shingles. The style is Early English, and the whole has been carried out from the designs and under the superintendence of the architects, Messrs. Douglas and Fordham, of Chester. Mr. T. Huxley, of Malpas, was the general contractor for the whole of the work, the brickwork, etc., being done by Mr. George Davies, of Frodsham, and the glazing and painting by Mr. Greening, of Tattenhall. The revolving shutters forming partition between chapel and school were supplied by Messrs. Hodkins and Co., of Liverpool.  [Building News 8 April 1887 page 536]
