NEW WESLEYAN CHAPEL, REGENT ROAD – The foundation stone of a new Wesleyan Chapel, about to be erected in Regent Road, was laid on Saturday by Mr Thomas Briggs. The building will be in the Italian style and will be faced with stock bricks and stone dressings. Its dimensions will be: Length 83 feet 4 inches, and breadth 54 feet; and the chapel itself, exclusive of the space appropriated to vestries, etc., will be 60 feet long by 50 feet wide. It will afford siting accommodation for 850 persons, including free seats for 280 and will have several entrances. The two principal entrances will face Regent Road and will give access to an outer vestibule communicating by doors with an inner one, from whence the body of the chapel will be entered, and a staircase will lead to the galleries. Two side entrances will give access to the free seats, and by two others the vestries, etc., will be entered. The external decorations will, without being elaborate, have a pleasing effect to the eye. The front entrances will be boldly projecting doorways, with small corbel columns, stone arching, carved capitals, and carved cornice. Over these will be a large couplet window, and at each side of this a single light, all being ornamented with stone beads and mouldings. The internal fittings will be of pitch pine, and spacious galleries will be erected at the front and both sides. Opposite the front entrance will be the pulpit and communion table, and at each side of these will be doors to the vestries. The architect is Mr J Webster, Marsden Street, Pall Mall, and the builder is Mr Mark Foggett, Elizabeth Street, Cheetham. The amount of the contract is £2,625.
