James Murray returned to Coventry in 1860 and "poached" John Cundall, previously an assistant in the office of Pugin and Murray, from the offices of George Gilbert Scott. The date of a formal partnership is uncertain but contemporary reports indicate that they were in partnership before the death of James Murray in October 1863. John Cundall continued the practice in order to complete outstanding commissions including churches at Sunderland and Bolton. However, he showed little appetite for continuing the Coventry practice, seemingly returning to London in 1864 before establishing his own practice in Leamington Spa in 1867.
