John Cundall was born in Leamington Spa in 1830 the son of George Cundall, grocer, and his wife, Sarah. Educated at Kenilworth before being articled to an (unknown) architect. He is recorded as an assistant to E Welby Pugin and James Murray before entering the office of George Gilbert Scott, and was resident in London at the time of the 1861 census. By September 1861 he appears to have returned to Leamington re-joining James Murray, at Coventry in partnership. James Murray died in October 1863 after which John Cundall continued the practice in order to complete churches at Sunderland and Bolton and gained the commission for the gas office at Bolton. Evidence suggests that he returned to London, where he designed his third child was born on 1866
