Arthur Henry Walsingham was born in 1862 at Corby, Lincolnshire the son of Edwin Walsingham, builder, and his wife Elizabeth and was originally trained as a joiner. Before 1890 he had moved to Manchester where he commenced training as an architect, attending the Manchester School of Art.
His association with the architect Frederic Smith, also originally of Corby, appears to have dated from the 1880s, Smith being a witness at his marriage in 1890. In 1900 he joined in partnership with Frederic Smith senior and his son as Smith, Walsingham and Smith architects. This partnership ceased in 1904 after which Walsingham commenced independent practice. Most of his commission were for various Co-operative Societies, principally Pendleton Co-operative Industrial Society Limited, Failsworth Industrial Society Limited, and Beswick Co-operative Society Limited. In later years he appears to have employed his son who continued the practice after his father’s death.
On 15 October 1890 he married Emily the daughter of Henry Edward Roberts at St Clement’s, Church, Longsight. They went on to have four children all born at Monton - Ina Marjorie Walsingham. Arthur R Walsingham (qv) Doris Eileen Walsingham and Alan Veric Walsingham
Arthur Henry Walsingham died on 18 January 1935 at Gogarth Villa, Monton Green in his 73rd year. With his wife, Walsingham is buried in the graveyard of the nearby Monton Unitarian Church, the grave being situated close to the path by the south aisle approximately midway along.
