The second son of James Murgatroyd, Arthur James Murgatroyd was born at Higher Broughton and educated at Manchester Grammar School. He continued the firm of Mills and Murgatroyd following his father’s death in 1894 remaining senior partner for the next 37 years. During this period the firm designed some twenty branches of the Manchester and County Bank Limited, and many warehouses. Arthur James Murgatroyd was also architect to the Manchester Board of Guardians.

He died on 17 March 1931 at Sunnyside, Marlborough Road Buxton, effectively bankrupt, his estate being subject to an Administration Order in the Case of Deceased Debtor in December 1931.
