The son of Charles Clegg FRIBA and Julia (nee Aylmer), Charles Theodore Clegg was born at Manchester on 4 June 1861. He was educated at Kensington Grammar School and studied art at South Kensington before returning to Manchester In 1882 at the age of 21 he was taken into partnership by his father in the firm of Clegg and Knowles, later Charles Clegg and Son. 1882. A Fellow of the Manchester Society of Architects.
C T Clegg became a member of John Shaw's in 1921 and remained so until his death in 1930. He appears to have been only the second architect to be invited to join the club in its 200-year history, William Wilkinson Whittaker, architect and surveyor, having briefly been a member 1860-62. “Charles Theodore Clegg came on the scene, a very regular and cheery member but sadly unproductive as a poet laureate!” John Shaw's 1738 -1938 Page 380
