Gordon Philip Whyman

Gordon Philip Whyman was born at Chorley near Macclesfied in 1909, the son of Thomas and Lucy Whyman. 1n 1939 Fred Thorpe and Gordon Philip Whyman entered into partnership under the style of Fred Thorpe and Whyman in Oldham and the following year Gordon Whyman moved with his wife Margaret to Uppermill.
During the Second World War he served as a major with the Royal Engineers in India, and was stationed on the North-West frontier for five years. After the war he returned to Fred Thorpe and the practice in Oldham and shortly thereafter they were joined Harry Briggs, the partnership, then renamed Thorpe Whyman and Briggs. His son, Stephen Briggs, followed him into the practice, before finally retiring to Norfolk in 2007.
Gordon Philip Whyman died peacefully at his son’s home in London, on 5 January 2013, aged 103 years.
