Born the son of Charles Brown, waiter, and his wife, Pamela Marie (Chandler), Herbert Harold Brown was born on 22 January 1876 at Altrincham. He was articled to John Macnamara of Altrincham in 1889. Attended Manchester School of Art. Assistant to E J Thompson and Son of Manchester about 1902-1905. He commenced independent practice 1905 in Manchester.

In 1903 he married Edith Emily Sutton at St Margaret’s Church, Dunham Massey. The couple had two sons, Herbert Austin Brown, born 1908, and Robert Maxwell Brown born 1910-11 who also became an architect.

Herbert Harold Brown died suddenly on 6 June 1938, aged 62 years and was interred at Brooklands Cemetery, Sale.
