In 1835, The Pennsylvania Hospital purchased a 101‑acre farm in West Philadelphia from Matthew Arrison, on which the new building was to be erected and on 26 July 26, 1836 the cornerstone of the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane was laid.

When Isaac Holden returned to England in 1838, Samuel Sloan was made Supervisor of the Works.
